Real Estate is a people business. We deal with emotions, rational and irrational thought, fears, hopes, dreams… all of it. Moving is usually an exciting and stressful time for people because is signifies big change. It’s a relocation, it’s a divorce, it’s a marriage, it’s a family, it’s expansion, it’s downsizing, it’s bankruptcy, it’s selling everything to travel the world, it’s purchasing investments for financial freedom. The vast spectrum of experiences are present within this one beautiful industry.
I’m currently re-reading “Money: Master the Game” by Tony Robbins. In this book, he briefly talks about the 6 human needs, and it captured my attention. I’ve been re-reading this section for a few nights now. According to Tony, “whatever you think your nirvana is, I have found it’s only an attempt by your brain to meet one or more of the 6 human needs.”
Furthermore, when a specific behavior or activity meets 3 or more of the 6 human needs, we can become addicted to it.
The 6 Human Needs are:
- Certainty / Comfort
- Uncertainty / Variety
- Love and Connection
I found this very interesting. As a real estate broker, I desire to maximize my human potential and positive impact in the local and global community. Understanding the 6 human needs helps us understand ourselves, serve our clients with understanding, and propose better strategies in negotiations when we understand what is driving their behavior.
On an unrelated topic, but related to human behavior…
Today, a story came across my Facebook feed about an American woman who shot and killed a rare Black giraffe. These men also on safari killing the world’s tallest land mammal.
My first reaction was, I mourned for these animals. I felt sad. How can I protect them? Then, I felt anger towards this woman. Those men. Then, anger towards the the hunting clubs and the governments.
Then… compassion set it. Curiosity set it.
this is a symptom of our world community. This is not the problem. This is a symptom of the deeper issues of our ONE human race.
WHY would someone do this? Which of their 6 human needs were satisfied?
significance? Did it make them feel significant and powerful over the tallest mammals on earth? Did it make them feel important?
certainty? Did they feel comfort and certain about their safety and trophy hunting in Africa?
uncertainty? Was variety at play too? They didn’t know for sure which one they would kill?
How else can we serve our human needs in constructive ways, that are compassionate and kind to ourselves and to the outer world? If these men and women felt significant in their lives, would they feel the need to do this? If they were tapped into their divine wisdom, which is within ALL OF US, would they need to do this?
Often times, Significance is the driving force for Violence. The mass shootings, random killings… It’s the easiest way for someone to feel powerful and significant… instantly. It’s the darker side of the spectrum. This is one of the reasons I do not support violent video games or movies present in the world. It perpetuates those visions and intentions. We are absorbing that into our consciousness whether we know it or not.
The lighter side is: You are enough. You matter. You are beautiful. You are so divinely powerful and wise. You are significant. You are appreciated. You are greatness.
It also gave me understanding about the addictive nature of social media.
It can serve all 6 human needs; comfort, variety, significance, love and connection, growth, and contribution. It serve all of those things, depending on how you use it. No wonder we are on our phones constantly.
What motivates you? What is driving your behavior and habits? I invite you to observe and ask yourself these questions:
“which human need is this serving?”
“what can I replace this habit with one that will serve the same human need, in a more beneficial way?”
